It is our democratic right, so why don’t we vote?

Yes it is the Local Government Elections.  They are as important as the Central Government elections.

The Massey Birdwood Settlers Association has run a meet the  mayoral candidates meeting and a meet the candidates meeting. Lots of opportunity for people to engage.

The candidates themselves are engaging through every form of media they can, however out here in the Henderson Massey Local Board area the numbers who have voted to date is less than in other parts of Auckland. Why?

Show people you care for democracy. That you care about our local parks. VOTE NOW.

Candidates Meeting 22nd September 7pm

The Massey Birdwood Settlers Association Inc, owners of the Massey Birdwood Settlers Hall, situated on the corner of Don Buck and Red Hills Road in Massey, are planning a meet the candidates meeting on Thursday 22nd September starting at 7pm.

Candidates for the Henderson Massey Local Board, the Waitakere Ward of the Auckland Council and the Waitemata District Health Board will be invited to speak.

Indoor Bowls

Our longest serving tenant is the Massey Indoor Bowling Club.  The club started using our hall in 1956. That’s 60 years ago.

The club is indoor bowlingstill going strong, however is always on the look out for new members.

Young and old can participate in the game, and many of the champions of the game are listed on the honour’s board that is mounted to the wall in the hall.

Many of the champions are Massey pioneers, people who first settled in the area.

Come and enjoy a game, Wednesday 7pm in the hall.

 

Who would you like to be Mayor?

The Mayoral hopefuls are out there campaigning.

We have a meeting in our hall on the 30th July at 3pm and you can listen to them try to convince you that they are the best.

In the meantime tell us who you would like to be Mayor by taking part in our poll, to the right of this story.

Three things we need to know about recycling in Massey

This July sees us take a massive step forward in the streamlining of Auckland’s different recycling services with the North Shore, Rodney and Hibiscus Coast and Waitakere moving to the same system as other parts of Auckland.

So if you live in any of these areas – or know someone who does – what do you need to know?

Three good things about the recycling changes

1. Co-mingling – no more bundling paper and cardboard separately, but please – no  plastic bags!
2. Tetra Pak ® packaging can now go in your recycling.
3. Larger bins – bin size has increased by 71% in Waitakere and the North Shore which means you can recycle even more.

Three things that may irritate you (and what you can do about it)

1. New collection days – we know it’s a pain, but here’s what you can do to make it easier:
• Check your new date on the calendar in the info pack that came with the bin
• Use the collection search tool
• Text your address to 3169 and a reminder will be texted the day prior to collection.

2. I had a perfectly good recycling bin – what am I supposed to do with it?
• Your old recycling bin has recycled itself. It can now be used as a waste bin for a brand new refuse collection that launches early 2017. Until then it’s yours to use for whatever you like.
• If you’re in Rodney feel free to keep your crate and use it around the house or garden. Alternatively you can drop it off for free at a transfer station or see if a local school is interested in taking it.

3. It’s all really confusing and difficult.
• Yes – and we’re sorry. It’s a lot of change to happen at once and we’ve been working hard to make the transition to the new recycling service as seamless as possible – but there will be teething problems. The purpose of this rollout is to have consistent waste services across Auckland Council and we’re asking people to bear with us while we get there.
