As a resident and ratepayer group we represent the views of the community to the local Council and Government, ensuring adequate resources are spent in the community that will benefit the whole community.

We have been doing this since 1925.

The awards take place 6pm, November 8th at the Council Chambers in Henderson and are the highlight of our year – celebrating the amazing work that groups and individuals have done to keep Waitakere beautiful.

Nominees should live or work in the Waitakere Ranges, Henderson-Massey or Whau local board areas.

As well as the categories listed below, this year we’re excited to introduce the Nikau Award for West Auckland businesses who are doing their part. Criteria includes:

Has the business gone above and beyond their legal obligations to prevent pollution or minimize waste?
Has the business taken action to reduce litter, weeds or graffiti on or around its premises?
Has the business supported its staff to undertake voluntary environmental action?
Has the business supported voluntary environmental action in the local community e.g. through sponsorship or in-kind support?
Has the business helped to educate the community or other businesses on environmental responsibility by sharing what it is doing to help the environment e.g. through signage at premises, promotional material or interactions with customers?

School Trash for Fashion – Corbans Art Centre

Trash to Fashion Finalist Showcase fuses art, fashion and performance, for a high-octane catwalk event that promises to explode with colour, movement and music.
The 130 finalists selected as the top designers in this year’s competition will be showcasing their entries. The event, which has been running for seventeen years, sees young Aucklanders challenged to create fashion or wearable art entirely from recycled materials.
The theme this year is Celebrate Individuality, giving entrants the opportunity to explore how they see themselves, what makes them unique and their diversity.
The production is directed by the award-winning team from Auckland’s Red Leap Theatre.

Come early to view the foyer display of entries into the Clutched Competition, where designers have made bags from recycled materials. Choose your favourite bag and cast your vote in the People’s Choice competition. Plus be wowed by some of the top designs from the 2012 competition on display in the foyer.

Harbourview Sculpture Trail

The mural on one of our walls is a true work of art, something that as a Community Massey and the Association would never have achieved without funds donated by the sponsors like Resene, Keep NZ Beautiful and of course the Ministry of Justice.

Harbourview land “the Peoples Park” is just down the road and in 2014 will be well worth a visit by Massey residents as 51 artists have been selected to exhibit at the 2014 Harbourview Sculpture Trail.

Following the success of the inaugural trail in March 2012, the Harbourview Sculpture Trail is an exciting new biennial event on the Auckland arts calendar, with the next exhibition planned for March 2014.

Many people believe the arts to be a vital aspect to a prosperous and healthy community.

The biennial event provides artists with the opportunity to raise their profiles and extend their practice. However, to bring their new sculptures to life, the expense of materials and delivery of their artworks can cost the artists hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.

With an ambitious target set at $20,000, the organisers of the Harbourview Sculpture Trial will be able to provide each artist with $300. The residual funds will then be used for equipment and transportation costs during the installation and removal of artworks from the site.

All donations receive a full tax rebate and are refunded completely if the target is not met by the end of September.

About the Henderson-Massey area
The Henderson-Massey Local Board area is located at the western end of the Waitemata Harbour. It includes the Te Atatu Peninsula and the suburbs of West Harbour, Westgate, Ranui, Massey, Henderson and Glendene.
Main retail areas are in Henderson and the Massey/Westgate shopping centre. Business activity is also concentrated along the Lincoln Road corridor. Te Atatu town centre is a vibrant neighbourhood centre.
Henderson town centre has a significant local government presence at the Waitakere Central complex, key government services and the Unitec campus. The town centre has an integrated bus and train station, with enhanced access to the heart of the civic, retail and business district.
The area is home to several cultural and recreational facilities, including the Corban Estate Arts Centre, Henderson Valley Studios, West Wave Aquatic Centre, The Trusts Stadium, the Netball Waitakere complex and Massey Leisure Centre. Both Opanuku and Oratia streams flow through Henderson and provide significant environmental, recreational and amenity benefits to the area.
The Henderson town centre is also the base of Te Whanau o Waipareira Trust’s activities.

Local Government Elections

The local Government Elections are looming and the Association encourages everyone to vote. Whether your young or old, male or female, white or brown , yellow or pink, the right to vote is one of the most fundamental rights that we have in this country.

However it does wish Secretary John Riddell and executive member Warren Flaunty all the best in their election campaigns.

We understand that Warren will be contesting the Rodney Local Board, the Trust and Health Board while John will be contesting the Henderson Massey Local Board. Both boards have common boundaries with the Association.

In years gone by, before the 1989 Local Government reforms, and the creation of Community Boards, resident and ratepayers associations like ours were the Community Boards and Local Boards of today and completely voluntary.

Now days Community Boards have been replaced by Local Boards, and it has fallen back to voluntary organisations like ours to take on the role of Community Watchdog and ensure our roads are safe, our parks are maintained, and a voice is heard opposing a sky tower being built next to your home.

The Association has been lucky to have had elected members ( Allen Davies, John Riddell and Warren Flaunty) on Councils, Community Boards and Local Boards serving on the its executive. Their collective and individual knowledge has helped the Association over the years achieve things for the community and of course the Association, its hall and many users have benefited from their govern ship experience.

If you would like to learn about the workings of Council and your community, by joining the Association you can cut your teeth on Council affairs and one day stand yourself for elected office knowing that you would know the language of local government. Alternatively you can remain in the back ground and assist the Association to grow and survive another 88 years of serving the community.
