As a resident and ratepayer group we represent the views of the community to the local Council and Government, ensuring adequate resources are spent in the community that will benefit the whole community.

We have been doing this since 1925.

family photosRina Maxwell-Hesp runs the Creative Memory classes on the third Saturday of the month in the Den.

You can join Rina on the 19th of January to learn lots of great new ideas, like how to make a family photo album.

By pre booking, Rina will give you a free gift  if you come along with a friend, and morning and afternoon tea, for both of you.

You will also be able to try out some of the tools that Rina uses before you are encouraged to buy a similar product for your use.

The day is a great day out with the girls(no boys?) and for those people who have no time to work on their albums at home (the advert for the boys?).

Bring a beach item (no bikinis or sand allowed in the Den) or some holiday photos and enjoy making your family photo album or any other album for that matter.

Massey is a north-western suburb of the Auckland conurbation. It was formerly a northern suburb of Waitakere City which existed from 1989 to 2010, before being replaced by the Auckland Council. The suburb was named after former Prime Minister of New Zealand William Massey. Massey is a relatively large suburb and can be divided into three reasonably distinctive areas, Massey West, Massey East (separated by the north-western motorway) and Massey North (situated to the north of Royal Road). Parts of Massey East are also known as ‘Royal Heights’ which is home to the Royal Heights shopping centre.

The population was 18,759 in the 2006 Census, an increase of 1,884 from 2001.[1]

Massey is home to one secondary school, Massey High School as well as several primary schools, including Colwill Primary School, Lincoln Heights School, Royal Road Primary School, Massey Primary School and Don Buck Primary School. Massey is not home to Massey University, which is based in Palmerston North with its Auckland campus at Albany. The suburb features a Leisure Centre and Library as well as the Westgate shopping complex on Hobsonville rd next to the north-western motorway and is set to be extended significantly to the north in the near future.[2]

The local rugby club is a member of the North Harbour Rugby Union and won the championship in 2005. Former All Black Jonah Lomu signed to play for Massey in 2005 but due to an injury was unable to play for them that season. He did however eventually make his debut for the club in 2006.

In Parliament Massey is represented by Labour MP Te Atatu MP Phil Twyford and te atatu National list MP Tau Henare. It is the centre of the local body ward of the same name that elects multiple councilors. The ‘Massey Ward’ contains the suburbs of Whenuapai, Hobsonville, West Harbour, Massey, Ranui, and Henderson North. It has a population of 49,413 (2006 census).[3]

Massey is also home to local hero’s. Rugby player’s such as George and Tusi Pisi (North Harbour, Samoa and New Zealand 7’s) as well as musicians such as Blindspott and 2kean.

Trial a class

FITNESS LEAGUE CLASSES  start  their second year at the Massey Birdwood Settlers Hall on Friday 8th February at 9.30am and is inviting  Massey residents to a come and trial a class. heritage2

The classes are going from strength to strength and the ladies who are now regular members say: I feel 2” taller after class: My co-ordination and balance has improved 100%: I’m amazed and thrilled at the improvement in the pelvic floor and  tummy regions.

The program is based on light cardio warming up, physiotherapy exercise, yoga, palates and dance.  The program aims at covering the whole of the body. You work at strengthening and  relaxation of each part of your muscle groups including brain and lungs, so you feel great afterwards.  All exercises’ are done with music. Sequences are also incorporated which help improve concentration and  provides  a chance for people to laugh and mingle with others.

A nice cup of tea is made by teacher Bredna for people to enjoy  after the class.

Holiday Rubbish collections

During the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, most council rubbish and recycling collections will be one day later than usual.

This will affect collections from Tuesday 25 December (Christmas Day), with the normal collection schedule resuming on Monday 7 January.

The same rules apply for collections over the Auckland Anniversary Day holiday (Monday 28 January), with normal collections resuming on Monday 4 February.

During these holiday periods, there will be no changes to the Thursday night rubbish collections in Parnell and Newmarket, and the CBD will see no changes to rubbish and recycling c

Reduce

  • Cut up old Christmas cards for tags for presents next year.
  • Save reusable items like wrapping paper, ribbons and gift bags to use again next year.
  • Separate cardboard packaging and gift catalogues for recycling.
  • Compost fruit and vegetable peelings from preparation of your festive fare.
  • Put selected food waste in the worm farm or bokashi bucket if you have one.
  • Pass on unwanted clothing to a charity clothing bin near you.
  • Buy an artificial Christmas tree that can be used year after year.

Recycle


  • Recycling on holiday    Recycle extra glass, cans and plastic bottles used during the festive season.
  • Put paper or cards (no glitter or foil) in the paper recycling collection.
  • Buy rechargeable batteries for Christmas toys and gadgets.
  • Buy native Christmas trees with roots to plant in the garden later on.
  • Grow your own native Christmas tree ready for December each year.
  • When you’re at the bach, locate your nearest recycling drop-off point.
  • Take your recycling home with you after your holiday.
  • Recycle bottles and cans to help keep your rubbish out of the beach and ocean.

Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME)

Living and coping with diabetes can be difficult – however having diabetes doesn’t mean you can’t lead a full and active life.

The DSME programme has been designed to provide you with the skills and confidence you need to take an active part in your own self care – together with your health team.

 Why attend a DSME course?    There is no cost to attend!

YOU are entitled to up to date information in a supportive environment in order to make informed choices about self management.  DSME is based on research which has shown that people with diabetes are the experts in their own care and need to be in control of managing their condition.

Who can attend?

  • People diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
  • People diagnosed as “pre-diabetic” or “borderline” diabetic
  • Supporters are encouraged to attend
